HUMBLE BEGINNINGSCalvert-Jones was founded in 1947 by Stanley Calvert, Walton Calvert and Jimmy Jones. Initially an appliance business, the company served both the burgeoning Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia communities. Based on the ever changing needs of their clients, the company gradually shifted focus, evolving into a full-service commercial mechanical contractor in the 1970s.
THE EXPERTISE AND SPECIALISTS TO GET THE JOB DONEToday, business owners rely on the expertise of the Calvert-Jones Team to map out a mechanical asset management plan based upon short term operational and energy savings that are addressed throughout the plan. "Our goal", affirms Don Ripley, Vice-President, Construction, "is to encourage additional savings and increased environmental wellness as our planned offerings are exercised." The modern Calvert-Jones Team is built on a solid foundation of professional and vital services that includes new construction, health-care, mechanical asset management, specialized renovation and repair projects, building automation and energy management, environmental consulting and predictive mechanical maintenance programs and service. "Our area of expertise," explains Ripley, "is in performing the difficult, intricate, specialized tasks that the majority of mechanical contractors in our area either choose not to perform, or are not focused on. We specialize in providing these types of solutions for our clients." In-house Team capabilities include certified medical gas piping, certified energy managers and a certified indoor environmentalist, as well as an integrated technical/ engineering team that is often sought out by the professional design community and the major equipment manufactures to provide professional support.
GOING GREENA sense of responsibility to excellence in leadership and a strong commitment to its clients position Calvert-Jones as an accountable resource and asset in specialty markets such as certified energy savings, LEED™-certified products and system applications, on-site environmental assessments, testing and sampling, independent laboratory analysis reports and retro-commissioning.
HEALTH CARECalvert-Jones has long been recognized as a leader in the healthcare arena. An ongoing association with Inova Heart Institute and Inova Fairfax Hospital is just one of many examples of how the company is serving the medical community. "We have enjoyed a strong working relationship with Inova for 15 years, as well as other healthcare clients for many years. When it came time for them to build the largest hospital building in the state dedicated to heart-related illnesses, they called us," notes Ripley. Calvert-Jones provided assistance on the project, including budgets, scheduling, value engineering, coordination with the ongoing hospital operations, as well as the actual construction of the project. The Calvert-Jones staff members dedicated to the project are those team members whose experience and expertise are mainly in the healthcare field. "This made for a productive project for all involved," says Ripley. "Owners don't want to pay for a learning curve on projects, especially in health care when people's lives are paramount."
PRESERVING HISTORYThe company's careful approach to HVAC installation also was important in the renovation of George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate. According to Don Ripley, the historic building was one of the last and oldest historic landmarks to add HVAC. "Remaining historic household artifacts could not be displayed during the year or at all unless the estate could be environmentally controlled. We have performed HVAC services for the owner of the estate for decades." It was this long-standing relationship that allowed the owner to put its trust in Calvert-Jones to carefully add an HVAC system while disturbing as little of the structure and the surrounding grounds. "Not only was this job a success," says Ripley, "but we were also awarded the contracts for a museum, an education center and an orientation center."
A HIGHER STANDARD OF EXCELLENCECalvert-Jones recently was awarded Best Contractor to Work For by ACCA and The Refrigeration News, supporting the organization's long-held belief that the ability to attract quality and reliable subcontractors and labor resources is of great importance. "When supporting contractor efforts are needed and team member commitments must be met," says Ripley, "the relationships nurtured by being fair, considerate and honest in past business experiences demonstrate another arena in which Calvert-Jones is favored. By treating others with professional courtesy, they, in turn, look forward to working with Calvert-Jones and will always represent us in a prudent manner." All parties are well served when Calvert-Jones is in a favorable position as a professional service provider. The same commitment that the company has to training team members in its own Alexandria, Virginia-based lab and classroom is exercised on a daily basis for each installation and mechanical solution. The result is a well-served client that benefits from the professional relationships Calvert-Jones has established and nurtured since 1947. Today, the Calvert-Jones name is recognized as a mechanical and integrated services industry leader. Our focus on health care, government security, and LEED certified energy and environmental services has positioned Calvert-Jones as a trusted, solution-driven, professional organization that not only meets but exceeds clients' expectations.
